After a series of staff strikes were scheduled to take place at Heathrow Airport across the summer, recent reports state that staff have now reached an agreement and called off the planned strikes.
Many strikes had been previously planned by the security officers at Heathrow Airport, taking part in the huge amount of staff strikes going on across the travel industry this year. However, these strikes have had their impact and it was reported on Friday the 23rd of June that a deal has been agreed.
The staff in question were members of the Unite union, with 2,000 staff that worked in Terminal 3 and 5 at Heathrow having planned a walkout to last 31 days. This was set to begin at the end of June and finish at the end of August but has since been cancelled.
The first of many staff strikes, a 2-day event, was cancelled just in time for a calm weekend over the 24th and 25th of June. This strike was taken down soon after a new pay offer was made by Heathrow Airport earlier this month, which has now been accepted by the staff.
The offer will include a pay rise between 15.5% and 17% for all security workers dependent on their pay band position at present. The offer also included improvements for their parental leave pay, the end of direct deployment action, and a pledge from Heathrow to remove agency workers from security roles.
Sharon Graham, Unite’s general secretary, said, “This was a hard-won victory which demonstrates what can be achieved when workers stand together and take action together.
“The pay deal at Heathrow is a further demonstration of how Unite’s complete focus on jobs, pay and conditions is having direct benefits for its members.”
