While the focus on environmental data in the travel industry has been growing roots rapidly, the CAA have announced their own next steps. The organisation plans to ensure that travellers are as well informed as possible. Through the CAA’s following consultation, consumers should be able to plan their holidays more assured that it will go smoothly.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has stated that it should be mandatory for passengers to receive a set level of environmental data that is accurate, understandable, and accessible.

With this mandatory data, travellers will be able to plan flights accordingly. This data should make them aware of anything that could affect either their flight or their destination.

The upcoming consultation not only aims to make this environmental data clear and accessible, but standardised across the industry. The consultation aims to set a bar for the kind of expectations consumers should have. It will continue to cover the type of environmental data necessary, how much detail should be accessible, and ensuring the clarity of the data.

This includes the use of standardised units, so passengers can expect clarity.

What Have the CAA Planned?

“We are developing our policies on how we can work with the industry on consumer environmental information, including designing a set of draft principles for airlines and other companies that advertise or sell flights to follow when calculating and providing environmental information to consumers on their flight,” the CAA said.

“Our purpose in developing these principles is to provide guidance for those organisations to calculate and publish environmental information for aviation consumers.”

CAA policy director, Tim Johnson, added, “Providing consumers with accessible, transparent, and accurate environmental information is essential to making more informed travel choices.

“Our new proposals aim to standardise this information across all platforms, enabling passengers to more easily compare the environmental impact of their flights.

“This initiative is a significant step towards greater transparency and improved sustainability in the aviation industry.”

“All of us want to do our bit to lower our environmental impact, but making informed choices is difficult to do when the data is not available,” the CAA’s head of sustainability, Harry Armstrong, said.

“That is why we’ve put forward proposals to ensure that consumers can make decisions about their travel plans by having environmental data available at the point of booking.”
