After announcing that they may allow entry for unvaccinated travellers in the next few days, Spain has relaxed entry rules for unvaccinated travellers outside the EU and Schengen Area.

At the end of last week, Spain hinted that they would be removing the ban against unvaccinated travellers from outside the EU shortly, and on Saturday the 21st of May, Spain relaxed entry rules for unvaccinated travellers officially. These new entry rules went into immediate effect on the 21st of May.

After the 21st of May, all travellers to Spain, from the EU and outside the EU, will only be required to provide proof of ONE of the following:

  • A full course of an approved vaccination programme
  • A negative PCR test taken up to 72 hours pre-departure OR a negative antigen test taken up to 24 hours pre-departure
  • Full recovery from Covid

This means that non-vaccinated travellers looking to visit Spain from outside the EU will only need to provide a negative Covid test result. Fully vaccinated travellers will still need to prove that they are vaccinated. Children aged 12-17 will also need to provide a negative test result, but children under 12 will remain exempt from all restrictions after Spain relaxed the entry rules.

Previously, UK travellers and other travellers outside the EU were only allowed to enter Spain if they had a vaccination certificate or proof of recovery. This was originally extended to June the 15th (more can be found out about the current entry rules for Spain on the Foreign Travel Advice page). Travellers and travel businesses alike were greatly anticipating the news that this extension would be removed, leaving many celebrating that Spain has relaxed the entry rules.

Reyes Maroto, the Spanish Tourism Minister, said this “new phase” to the Covid pandemic made Spain able to relax these rules now, ready for the busy summer ahead.

“This is excellent news, much awaited by the tourism sector,” she added. “Spain is becoming one of the most desired destinations in the world.”
