Following a lot of changes in restrictions, rules, warnings, and bookings over the past couple of months, the FCDO have lifted their Sri Lanka travel ban again, allowing UK travellers more confidence in entering Sri Lanka again.
The Sri Lanka travel ban was lifted on Friday the 26th of August, announced by the FCDO and updated on the Foreign Travel Advice page that morning. The lift of the Sri Lanka travel ban means that the FCDO are no longer advising against all but essential travel, though they are still issuing some warnings surrounding travel to Sri Lanka.
“It is more important than ever to get appropriate travel insurance and check it provides sufficient cover,” the FCDO has warned, encouraging travellers to stay aware and up-to-date if they intend to travel to Sri Lanka.
The FCDO originally set out advice against travel to Sri Lanka in the middle of May this year, with the Sri Lanka travel ban lifted on the 10th of June but reinstated at the beginning of July. It has been a tentative process to adapt to for the travel industry, with many operators hoping for the change that came on the 26th of August after France had lifted its warnings against travel to Sri Lanka last week.
Unfortunately, this update came too late for some travel companies, who cancelled many trips to Sri Lanka for their travellers in staying with the previous travel warnings.
The state of emergency in Sri Lanka was due to expire on Saturday the 27th of August, with the 26th of August travel ban lifted in time for this. However, the FCDO is still warning travellers about situations following the lift of the state of emergency and said, “Protests, demonstrations, roadblocks and violent unrest could occur at short notice. Curfews and emergency regulations may also be imposed.”
