The Foreign Office has released some important advice for all travellers currently in Sri Lanka as news of an incoming cyclonic storm came out over the past few days.

Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology has released a report for all residents and international travellers in the destination at present stating that showers and thundershowers are both expected. These are predicted to take place in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western, and Southern provinces of the country from Wednesday the 10th of May onwards.

Beyond this, fairly heavy showers are expected in Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces as well as the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts. This news prompted warnings to both residents and travellers from the FCDO and local authorities.

International travellers to Sri Lanka have been advised that the showers and thundershowers expected may occur at several other places across the island during the afternoon and night. They were also advised that strong winds are incredibly likely across the western and southern coastal areas of Sri Lanka as well as the western slopes of the central hills.

The advice put out by the FCDO on the Foreign Travel Advice page states that travellers should take “adequate precautions” in order to reduce the potential damage caused by the strong wind and lightning due during the thundershowers.

The FCDO said, “A depression in the southeast Bay of Bengal will gradually develop into a cyclonic storm. Strong winds, showers and thundershowers are expected across Sri Lanka from 10 May 2023. The public is advised to take precautions.”
