The FCDO has released a warning for any travellers to the United States following several updates this week concerning ongoing Canadian wildfires.

Early in the week, several airlines saw significant delays when travelling to New York airports in the US because of poor visibility caused by excessive amounts of smoke. The low visibility over the state affected flights to other states as well, such as Philadelphia.

More recently, news has come out of increased low visibility areas as smoke pollution due to the acceleration of the Canadian wildfires. Smoke has drifted south from Canada and prompted the response of the FCDO in an updated warning on the Foreign Travel Advice page.

The warning to all travellers specifies poor air quality across the east coast of the US, alongside ongoing flight disruptions. According to reports, on the morning of the 8th of June, North America had the worst air quality in the world due to the Canadian wildfires, of which there are 150 separate fires in Quebec alone.

The FCDO advice states, “Smoke from wildfires in Canada is currently causing poor air quality across parts of the east coast of the US.

“You should check AirNow.gov for updates on the current air quality in your location and follow the advice given by the US authorities, including wearing a face mask to protect yourself.

“Air travel may also be disrupted. You should check the status of your flight with your airline before travelling.”
