Following a lot of concern surrounding the wildfires in Rhodes, the state of emergency that was declared last month has now been lifted to the excitement of many travellers and travel businesses alike.
The state of emergency was originally implemented by the Greek authorities in Rhodes due to recent wildfires that were affecting a majority of the island. Warnings were later reflecting the state of emergency on the FCDO Foreign Travel Advice page, however many travellers and travel businesses declared that holidays would still be going on.
The state of emergency was declared in July and backed up by authorities. With the wildfires reportedly managed, the Foreign Office has released an update to reflect that the emergency was lifted after a protocol was agreed upon on the 26th of July.
The FCDO Update said, “Extreme temperatures are affecting many areas of Greece. There are active wildfires across Greece, including in populated areas on the mainland and a number of islands.
“The ‘state of emergency’ in Rhodes, declared by the Greek authorities on 26 July, has now been lifted.”
Following the update, the Greek authorities in Rhodes have also brought forward new plans to boost tourism following the effects of the wildfires. There are FAMs and press trips reportedly organised for later this month alongside their boost in advertising to remove the caution that has been instilled surrounding the island last month.
The government in Greece has stated it is working with tourism bodies and local authorities to Rhodes to support local residents and businesses that were affected by the blow to the tourism sector following the fires.
