Many destinations across Southern Europe and the Mediterranean are experiencing the beginning of the heatwave that is crossing the world this summer.

Referred to commonly as El Nino, it has been reported that the heatwave is caused by deviation from the normal fluctuation of the Earth’s climate. This fluctuation is caused by the change in temperature in the Pacific Ocean, and El Nino is the hottest phase of the cycle, usually 2-7 years long and causing more frequent extreme weather events like the current heatwave.

Currently, the heatwave is affecting Italy, Spain, and Greece among other European states. These three top destinations have been put on alert due to the severity of the 40+ temperatures caused by the heatwave. The temperatures are presently set to peak over the course of this weekend.

Reports state that Italian authorities have placed many regions on alert, such as Sicily and Sardinia, for temperatures that are expected to reach 48 degrees as a symptom of anti-cyclone Cerberus which is coming across from the Sahara.

It has also been reported that Spain, France, Greece, Croatia, and Turkey will be affected by 40+ temperatures during the peak of the heatwave. Today, Friday the 14th of July has been set as the beginning of the peak.

Spain is set to exceed 37 degrees in the southern cities, including Cordoba and Sevilla. Greece, meanwhile, is set to close several of its archaeological sites because of the heatwave.

Many authorities are looking to take action for the comfort of citizens. In Athens, they are looking to add more shaded areas at the Acropolis and are handing out water to tourists in order to prevent heatstroke from the high temperatures.
