Japan Open To Limited Travellers From Friday

Japanese authorities confirmed this week that after a long wait of nearly three years, Japan will open its borders to a limited selection of travellers again from this Friday.  

Starting on Friday, the 10th of June, Japan will open its borders back up to tourists from 98 different countries around the world, including the UK. Their borders will be open to a specific audience from these countries, limited to fully escorted group tours with set itineraries that are run by licensed Japanese tour operators.  

Entry to Japan has been banned for travellers for nearly three years during the Covid pandemic. Japan will open now on the 10th of June, just in time for the summer of 2022, with travel abroad in huge demand.  

Travellers in the groups allowed entry to Japan will not need to quarantine or take any Covid tests upon arrival in Japan. All travellers will only need to produce evidence of a negative PCR test, taken within 72 hours pre-departure. They will also need approved Covid medical insurance (you can find out more about the specific entry requirements for Japan on the Foreign Travel Advice page). 

Many tour operators that have been approved to provide group tours to Japan in the coming months are celebrating this move, calling it a great first step forward for Japan’s tourism after three years closed off.
