Following a busy summer for the travel industry in the recovery from the Covid pandemic, Majorca has begun to reassess its tourism strategy, making plans to potentially reduce the number of tourists visiting the country at a time.
With the busy summer visits for Majorca in 2022, many locals complained about overcrowding of tourists since the higher demand for travel surged this year. This comes from local reports and the government in Majorca has decided to look more into the surge of tourism they are now experiencing.
According to these reports, the governing council is also looking into the potential to close some accommodations as part of this plan to reduce the number of travellers. The government plans to triple the number of inspectors over the coming months. These inspectors will check on illegal holidays lets to reduce the accommodation to legal, quality businesses.
The government has sent out a warning to any who own apartments and villas and are renting out these properties ‘under the radar’, these owners will be fined upon inspection if they are found to be renting illegally.
The president of Majorca, Catalina Cladera, stated that the government of Majorca are hoping this plan will attract ‘tourism of higher worth and fewer quantity’ for the future, adhering to local complaints while bringing in more quality tourism to the island.
“I will not deny it, this summer there has been overcrowding in some points,” Cataline Cladera said. “The brand new tourism regulation marks the roadmap with the moratorium and the blocking of recent locations.”
This does not, as yet known, change anything to the country’s entry requirements for travellers, however further details on travel to Majorca following this plan can be found on the Foreign Travel Advice page run by the FCDO.
