According to the latest travel consumer survey run with 2000 UK travellers, a majority of travel consumers who travelled in 2022 plan to spend the same amount or spend less on holidays over the course of the next 12 months.
From the results of the survey, only 4% of respondents who had gone on a holiday in 2022 stated that they do not intend to travel again over the course of the next 12 months. From the respondents who had gone on holiday in 2022, a majority stated they expected to spend the same or more money on holiday in the next 12 months despite the cost of living crisis.
Across all respondents to the survey, over a third (35%) of travel consumers stated in the survey that they intended to spend less on holidays over the course of the next 12 months. This intention majorly came about because of the rising cost of household bills in the UK.
From this 35% of consumers who intend to spend less on holidays, 36% wanted to take less holidays, 28% wanted to take cheaper holidays, and 23% wanted to reduce the number of times they eat out while on their holiday. 22% wanted to book cheaper accommodation, 19% wanted to take only staycations in the UK, 19% wanted to travel to closer destinations to the UK, and 17% said they would do fewer activities. According to the results of this survey, not only do more consumers intend to spend less on holidays next year, but there is evidence of travellers becoming more aware of financial and legal protection and the benefits of booking with a professional.
From the results, 63% of consumers set out their intent to pay more attention to the terms and conditions relevant to their bookings. This comes after the number of consumers booking with a travel professional this year as shown some increase from the levels of 2019, pre-pandemic. Young people and young families specifically opted to book with a travel professional this year.
For 44% of people who chose to book with a travel professional, 44% did so for ease of booking and 35% claimed their motivation was the need for someone to help and support them if anything went wrong with their booking.
63% of travellers booked a package holiday in 2022, and a third of these said they did so because it offered the best value, with almost a third of these all saying they most appreciated that everything was taken care of for them. Many travellers also found sustainability a bigger concern, and 41% stated that they chose one company over another because of better sustainability, this going up from 19% in 2011.
