Following an announcement on Tuesday the 19th of April, Spain have determined that they will reduce their indoor face mask requirement for the first time in almost 2 years, spanning the majority of the pandemic.
Since May 2020, this will be the first time during the Covid pandemic that Spain will relax their indoor face mask requirement. This news has been received optimistically by avid travellers and travel businesses alike, with the relax of the indoor face mask requirement making travel to and in Spain simpler.
As of Wednesday the 20th of April, the reduced indoor face mask requirements have been put in place in Spain.
People, including travellers, will no longer be required to wear face masks or face coverings in most indoor spaces. This includes but is not limited to:
- Bars
- Restaurants
- Shops
- Cinemas
The requirement for indoor face masks will still be mandatory in some indoor public spaces, such as:
- Public Transport
- Hospitals
- Medical Centers
- Nursing Homes
- Care Homes
In the case of medical facilities, the patients will not be required to follow this rule, only visitors and staff. Masks and face coverings will also still be encouraged, though not necessary, in enclosed public spaces, at large events, and around people considered clinically vulnerable.
On Tuesday the 19th of April, Health Minister, Carolina Darias, said, “The mask without doubt has been one of the most identifiable measures over the past two years and it will no longer be obligatory.
“They will continue to be with us as an element of protection, particularly for the most vulnerable.”
These relaxed requirements were also updated on the Foreign Travel Advice page, which states, “The Spanish government recommends you use [masks] in the following circumstances: enclosed public spaces such as shops, cinemas, bars and restaurants, at large events (e.g. concerts, sporting events), when in the company of people considered clinically vulnerable or high-risk and social distancing of 1.5m cannot be observed, at family gatherings, in any other enclosed communal spaces open to the public.”
