After the travel ban put in place last month, in May, the Sri Lanka travel advice has been relaxed by the Foreign Office (FCDO).

The updated travel advice can be found on the Foreign Travel Advice page and details the current warnings surrounding and Sri Lanka travel advice, these warnings are, however, no longer banning travellers from visiting the destination.

This update came out yesterday, Friday the 10th of June, and the FCDO stated that they no longer advise against all but essential travel to the country. This comes after the FCDO put Sri Lanka travel advice in place in May due to “ongoing political and economic instability”.

The FCDO still have in place a warning that the economic situation in Sri Lanka is ‘challenging’ and there are ongoing power cuts and fuel shortages. However, operators have stated that tourists remain relatively unaffected by this.

“There may be long queues at shops and supermarkets, fuel stations, and pharmacies,” the FCDO said. “There may be difficulties or delays obtaining taxis and other public transport. There are ongoing daily power cuts due to electricity rationing.”

“A state of emergency in Sri Lanka has been lifted, however some military presence remains on the streets. Curfews may be imposed at short notice.

“If you are in Sri Lanka at this time, or considering travel, you should check local information and stay away from protests.”
