Reports this week have revealed the progression of Storm Hilary from the coasts of Mexico and into Southern California. The storm has caused natural damage and floods across Mexico’s Pacific coast and is now causing damage control to step in across California.
Over the weekend, Storm Hilary reportedly wreaked havoc across Mexico including countless floods over the coast that have put lives in danger. The officials and UK Foreign Office have stepped in to release a warning to all travellers planning on visiting South California.
The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) released a statement on Monday the 21st of August and claimed they were “actively coordinating with local, state and federal partners to provide communities with any resources needed” to combat the potential damage of Storm Hilary.
“As Tropical Storm Hilary hits California tonight, Cal OES reminds you to avoid going outside and listen to your local authorities. Falling debris and flooded roadways are dangerous. Stay safe California,” officials tweeted on Monday.
A State of Emergency was declared on Saturday the 19th of August across southern California with warnings of floods to come in the early hours of Monday. Gavin Newsom, the California governor, said, “California has thousands of people on the ground working hand-in-hand with federal and local personnel to support communities in Hurricane Hilary’s path with resources, equipment and expertise. We’re mobilising all of government as we prepare and respond to this unprecedented storm.”
As a result of the reports, the FCDO have updated the Foreign Travel Advice page to advise travellers on how this could affect any travel to California. It calls on travellers already in Mexico and California to follow local advice and any guidance from their travel providers.
“Tropical storm conditions are possible from Sunday 20 August in parts of southwest USA, as a result of Hurricane Hilary. A tropical storm watch has been issued for southern California,” it read.
“You should closely monitor local and international weather updates from the US National Hurricane Center and follow the advice of local authorities and the tour operator, including any evacuation orders.”
