As of Wednesday the 24th of October, travellers have been issued an official warning surrounding threats in Sri Lanka. The warning was initially issued by the US government, and was later backed up by the FCDO, alerting UK travellers.

The alert was released due to the threat surrounding a popular surfing spot on the island, Arugam Bay. The FCDO travel advice page has also been updated in tandem with the alert to keep travellers informed.

“The US Embassy received credible information warning of an attack targeting popular tourist locations in the Arugam Bay area,” the FCDO quoted the US Embassy as saying.

“Due to the serious risk posed by this threat, the Embassy imposed a travel restriction on Embassy personnel for Arugam Bay effective immediately and until further notice.

“US citizens are strongly urged to avoid the Arugam Bay area until further notice.” The FCDO also added, “Be aware of your surroundings at all times, and follow our guidance on safety and security.”

While the existing travel advice already warned tourists that terrorists attacks are still a possibility, it has been updated to emphasis this. It currently reads, “attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals such as hotels, tourist sites and places of worship. Avoid crowded public places, large gatherings and demonstrations, and follow the advice of local authorities.”

Travellers that already have plans to visit Sri Lanka are advised to stay away from areas with the highest risks.
